UE Bagels
Varsity Lakes
UE Bagels brings a "hole" lot of boiled dough goodness to Scottsdale Drive in Varsity Lakes and those in the know can tell you, it's all about the toppings.
Hidden in industrial centre at the Reedy Creek Road end of Scottsdale Drive, you’ll need to look out for the black and white sandwich board signs for the driveway that leads back to the bagel heaven that is AE Bagels. Humble roller doors and industrial walls adorned with gig posters of grunge rock gods give little indication of the foodie joy this place brings.
For those not in the know, a bagel is essentially a bread roll originating in the Jewish communities of Poland, traditionally made from yeasted wheat dough that is shaped by hand into a torus or ring, briefly boiled in water, and then baked. The result is a dense, chewy, doughy interior with a browned and sometimes crisp exterior. And bagels go perfectly with coffee. Those are the basics but there’s nothing basic about UE Bagels.
The bagel brainchild of couple Mitch and Emily was born out of their discovery of the doughy goodness whilst on an extended Canadian adventure, living and mountain biking in picturesque Lake Louise. Somewhere between the bagel-stylings of New York’s crispy outer style and Montreal soft inner style, the couple have honed UE Bagels to perfection, baking and boiling them from 3am daily, always adapting them to suit Australian tastes.
The real brilliance of UE Bagels can be found in the creative flavours and topping combinations that are constantly rotating on their beloved bagel menu. Bagel novices might choose to kick off with a simple choice of spread, from cream cheese to Nutella, jam or honey. Those with more bagel experience will deliberate between such delectable delights as the Hot Ham Honey Bagel, the Chicken Caesar Bagel or the Smoked Salmon Lox Bagel.
The Breaky Bagel (above) with your choice of bacon, sausage or avocado with egg, cheese, rocket Chipotle and BBQ sauce is still the best breakfast option around, and later in the day it's hard to go passed the BLAT Bagel (below), with bacon, rocket, tomato, avocado and mayonnaise, for lunch.
While many Bagel lovers choose to eat-in and enjoy the their chosen bite and beverage—be it a caffeine hit from Social brew beans, or frappes, milkshakes or vegan and gluten-free smoothies—either outdoors under shady umbrellas or inside at the cushioned bench or high topped tables, other smart bagels lovers too busy to even grab and go, order delights and take-home four packs to be delivered.
One way or another, no matter how they reach your tastebuds, Mitch and Emily’s beloved bagels are bound to become part of your daily breakfast or brunch routine. Enjoy!
